BHM 311 Refresher
🚨 COMMUNITY HOT TOPIC: Let’s Talk Birmingham 311 🚨
Today’s ACE 2.0 meeting notes:
We’ve been getting real insight into how the system works behind the scenes—and if you care about getting things fixed in your neighborhood, this matters.
Here’s what you need to know:
📌 The 311 team is located in City Hall with the 911 team.
There’s a dedicated team of 8 (plus a manager) working to route and manage cases across the city.
📸 Pictures speed everything up
If you’re submitting a request, add photos. It helps teams understand the issue immediately and move quicker.
🧾 Keep your case number
Whether it’s generated online or given by an operator—hold onto it. That number is key to tracking and locating your request faster.
📍 Details matter—A LOT
Accurate location info + clear descriptions = better results. The more specific you are, the easier it is to resolve the issue.
⚙️ Improvements are in progress
They’re actively working on simplifying the system to make it smoother and more user-friendly.
🚧 What’s going on right now:
• Public Works has a new manager, so some cases may not appear “open” correctly—but work is still happening behind the scenes
• Some departments have been slow to close out cases, even after issues are handled (this was brought up by the community)
🗺️ GIS (mapping systems) also plays a role in how cases are tracked and routed—so accuracy in your submission really matters.
💡 Bottom line: 311 can be a powerful tool—but only if we use it right AND hold the system accountable.
